Workshop Description:
Although, grief and loss are a normal part of a child’s development; it may negatively impact a child’s mental and physical wellness if left untreated. Learn how nature in play therapy can help children of various ages work with their grief process. Those who use play therapy in their work will understand the grief process from the perspective of the developmental stages and the polyvagal theory (safety). Learn how to bring in cues of safety through nature which can help regulate the client and widen their window of tolerance. This play therapy workshop will help you develop the ability to be with children in their grief process, and help children move towards healing with nature based interventions. Research that supports nature will be reviewed. Learn psychoeducation information and common misconceptions about grief to help caregivers support children. Experiential play therapy activities, case examples, and interventions of bringing nature indoors or outdoors will be a part of this training.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
- Explain grief and loss in play therapy through developmental stages and the lens of interpersonal neurobiology.
- Describe several research studies that have identified nature based interventions that help heal.
- Describe the importance of helping children in play therapy (or play therapy clients) grieve by implementing regulation and connection with nature.
- Discuss and deepen your own personal relationship with nature in play therapy through experiential exercises.
