Workshop Description:

Based on the principles of Expressive Play Therapy,® a holistic and integrative approach developed by Marie José, this workshop will focus on using the healing medium of Sand Play Therapy to safely facilitate symbolic expression and transformation of painful experiences, and provide children, youth, and adults, including ourselves, with ways of facing the challenges of our daily lives. Sand Play Therapy not only helps us transform our painful experiences but makes it possible for us to access the strength and guidance needed to go through the process.

Marie José’s premise is that every human being has a true nature, also called the Self, that holds an innate wisdom with a drive to grow towards the light and it is essential for us to be connected to it in order to develop and cope with the challenges of life. The Self is the source of healing, wisdom, and guidance and it is essential for us as therapists to be connected to it in order to attune, follow, and guide our client’s healing journey. Ongoing self-care and replenishment is essential for us to maintain the stamina necessary to provide children and their families with a safe place to heal.

Celebrating her 50th year as a therapist, Marie José will be sharing with us how she has continued to make a time and a place to make her own imagery as a way of connecting with her Self. This has allowed her to keep practicing, growing, and still love being a play therapist after all these years. Using her approach to Sand Play Therapy for both her clients and herself has helped to engage the wisdom and support of the Self while expressing and transforming the blocks created by past experiences. Participants will be given the opportunity to make, witness, and debrief Sand Play Therapy images.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the history and development of Sand Play Therapy within the context of Expressive Play Therapy®.
  2. Identify three unique and specific gifts of Sand Play Therapy as one of the many expressive therapies available in play therapy sessions.
  3. Discuss how to conduct Sand Play Therapy sessions with children, youth, adults, and families, while considering the setting, accessibility, age groups, and demographics.
  4. Prepare a Sand Play Therapy area while taking into consideration various materials and symbols.
  5. Discuss and identify the many ways self-healing manifests itself in Sand Play Therapy imagery.
  6. Participants will explore the demands, challenges, and long-term side effects of being a therapist and possible ways of utilizing Sand Play Therapy in their healing in order to continue facilitating the healing of the children and families they work alongside.

WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM ATTENDING:

Play therapists, children’s counsellors, family therapists, family counsellors, psychologists, social workers, school counsellors, and other mental health professionals working with children, adolescents, and families will benefit from this training. A basic understanding of play therapy would be beneficial.

“The activities that are the easiest, cheapest, and most fun to do – such as singing, playing games, reading, storytelling, and just talking and listening – are also the best for child development.”
