Workshop Description:
Webinar 1. Integrating Culturally-Inclusive Sand Tray in the Playroom
Sand tray therapy is a play-based intervention used with diverse populations, making cultural inclusivity essential in play therapy practice. This webinar explores the importance of culturally inclusive sand tray miniatures, along with key sensory considerations when working with neurodiverse clients.
Participants will reflect on their own sand tray sets and playroom setup while developing a plan to increase cultural awareness in their sessions. Experiential learning will also support participants in promoting social justice and advocacy through sand tray work in the playroom.
Learning Objectives:
After participating in this workshop, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to:
- Identify diverse sand tray miniatures to create culturally inclusive playrooms
- Discuss cultural considerations in sand tray set up in the playroom 3
- Describe sensory considerations in sand tray in play therapy sessions
Webinar 2. Love is Love: Play Therapy to Enhance Pride in LGBTQ+ Children & Youth
LGBTQ+ children and adolescents may be dealing with the stress of exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity, especialy if they lack strong support systems. Therefore, it is imperative that play therapists create safe play environments when working with sexual minority youth. This webinar wil explore the importance of building strong therapeutic relationships in the playroom with LGBTQ+ children and families, through the use of seminal play theories to promote empowerment and self-esteem. Participants wil also explore the careful introduction of caregivers into family play therapy to repair damaged relationships and enhance the parent child relationship.
Learning Objectives:
After participating in this workshop, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to:
- Discuss key items to include in the playroom to create safe spaces for LGBTQ+ children
- Use play-based interventions to empower LGBTQ+ children and adolescents
- Assess family play therapy techniques to repair the caregiver-child relationship
Webinar 3. Shades of Play: Playful Techniques to Address Racial Trauma in Children of Color
Children of color often experience ongoing race-based stress, or racial trauma, that is frequently overlooked in clinical practice. This webinar examines racial trauma through a culturaly responsive play therapy lens, highlighting play-based approaches to better support children of color. Participants wil explore key considerations for creating an inclusive playroom, including intentional toy selection, materials, and clinician self-awareness. Attendees will leave with practical play therapy strategies and play-based interventions that promote emotional expression, build rapport, and foster resilience in the playroom and beyond.

After participating in this workshop, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to:
- Explore play themes that may signal racial trauma in children of color
- Discuss cultural considerations when gaining play therapy buy-in with children of color
- Identify key items to creative a culturally inclusive playroom
Webinar 4. Supportive Spaces: Promoting Cultural Inclusivity in Play Therapy Supervision
Play therapy supervision should be a safe place for play therapists from al backgrounds. It is the responsibility of the Registered Play Therapist Supervisor to provide ethically sound play therapy supervision in a supportive environment that is respectful of al backgrounds and beliefs. This webinar will explore the importance of providing culturally inclusive play therapy supervision sessions, both in-person and virtually, that set the tone to mentor culturally competent play therapists.
Learning Objectives:
After participating in this workshop, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to:
- Discuss the core concepts of Relational-Cultural Play Therapy Supervision (RCT)
- Identify self-assessment tools to use in play therapy supervision to evaluate areas of growth for cultural competence
- Analyze play-based strategies for supervisees to evaluate their cultural identities in play therapy supervision

Play therapists, children’s counsellors, family therapists, family counsellors, psychologists, social workers, school counsellors, and other mental health professionals working with children, adolescents, and families will benefit from this training.
About the Presenter:
April Duncan, DSW, LCSW, RPT-S™ , earned her Bachelor of Arts and Science from the University of Missouri–Columbia (2006), her Master of Social Work from Saint Louis University (2012), and her Doctorate of Social Work from the University of Southern California (2021).
Dr. Duncan is a racial trauma expert and the founder of BMH Connect, an organization dedicated to advancing cultural inclusivity in play therapy. She serves as Chief Program Officer for a minority-focused nonprofit supporting child and adolescent mental health in Pasadena, California, and is an adjunct instructor in Tulane University’s online MSW program.
She is also the author of several play-based publications.
