Workshop Description:
Webinar 1. Integrating Culturally Inclusive Sand Tray in the Playroom
Sand tray therapy is a play-based intervention used with diverse populations, making cultural inclusivity essential in play therapy practice. This webinar explores the importance of culturally inclusive sand tray miniatures, along with key sensory considerations when working with neurodiverse clients. Participants will reflect on their own sand tray sets and playroom setup while developing a plan to increase cultural awareness in their sessions. Experiential learning will also support participants in promoting social justice and advocacy through sand tray work in the playroom.
Learning Objectives:
After participating in this workshop, participants may be equipped with the knowledge and tools to:
- Identify diverse sand tray miniatures to create culturally inclusive playrooms
- Discuss cultural considerations in sand tray set up in the playroom
- Describe sensory considerations in sand tray in play therapy sessions

About the Presenter:
April Duncan, DSW, LCSW, RPT-S™ , earned her Bachelor of Arts and Science from the University of Missouri–Columbia (2006), her Master of Social Work from Saint Louis University (2012), and her Doctorate of Social Work from the University of Southern California (2021).
Dr. Duncan is a racial trauma expert and the founder of BMH Connect, an organization dedicated to advancing cultural inclusivity in play therapy. She serves as Chief Program Officer for a minority-focused nonprofit supporting child and adolescent mental health in Pasadena, California, and is an adjunct instructor in Tulane University’s online MSW program.
She is also the author of several play-based publications.

Play therapy credits are only awarded to mental health professionals. Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree.

APT Approved Provider 95-019 – BCPTA is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to provide continuing education specific to play therapy.
CAPT Approved Provider 09-103 – BCPTA is approved by the Canadian Association for Play Therapy to provide foundation training and continuing education training specific to child and play therapy. This training cannot be used for Foundation Play Therapy Training towards Certification with CAPT as a Certified Play Therapist (CPT).
