Workshop Description:
Webinar 2. Love is Love: Play Therapy to Enhance Pride in LGBTQ+ Children & Youth
LGBTQ+ children and adolescents may be dealing with the stress of exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity, especially if they lack strong support systems. Therefore, it is imperative that play therapists create safe play environments when working with sexual identity minority youth. This webinar will explore the importance of building strong therapeutic relationships in the playroom with LGBTQ+ children and families, through the use of seminal play theories to promote empowerment and self-esteem. Participants will also explore the careful introduction of caregivers into family play therapy to repair damaged relationships and enhance the parent child relationship.
Learning Objectives:
After participating in this workshop, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to:
- Discuss key items to include in the playroom to create safe spaces for LGBTQ+ children
- Use play-based interventions to empower LGBTQ+ children and adolescents
- Assess family play therapy techniques to repair the caregiver-child relationship

About the Presenter:
April Duncan, DSW, LCSW, RPT-S™ , earned her Bachelor of Arts and Science from the University of Missouri–Columbia (2006), her Master of Social Work from Saint Louis University (2012), and her Doctorate of Social Work from the University of Southern California (2021).
Dr. Duncan is a racial trauma expert and the founder of BMH Connect, an organization dedicated to advancing cultural inclusivity in play therapy. She serves as Chief Program Officer for a minority-focused nonprofit supporting child and adolescent mental health in Pasadena, California, and is an adjunct instructor in Tulane University’s online MSW program.
She is also the author of several play-based publications.

Play therapy credits are only awarded to mental health professionals. Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree.

APT Approved Provider 95-019 – BCPTA is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to provide continuing education specific to play therapy.
CAPT Approved Provider 09-103 – BCPTA is approved by the Canadian Association for Play Therapy to provide foundation training and continuing education training specific to child and play therapy. This training cannot be used for Foundation Play Therapy Training towards Certification with CAPT as a Certified Play Therapist (CPT).
