- Discussion on Therapeutic Endings
May 15, 2020
9:30 am - 11:00 am
THIS DISCUSSION WILL TAKE PLACE ONLINE. YOU WILL BE EMAILED A ZOOM LINK PRIOR TO THE EVENT.
This Play Café will be an opportunity to gather and share thoughts about ways to make the most of the final phase of therapy, whether at the end of a session or as we terminate therapy. How do you create meaning as you say good-bye? How do you handle the child who is screaming “NO!” and refusing to leave the playroom? What activities have you found useful at the end of therapy? Is it okay for us as therapists to name our feelings as therapy ends? What if the main feeling is relief? There are lots of things we can talk about and learn from each other about this precious, yet often difficult, phase of therapy.
Discussion will be facilitated by Janet Waines, RCC and Naomi Ballantyne, RCC.
Janet is a Child and Family Therapist with years of experience both as a clinical counsellor and as a pediatric nurse. She currently works in private practice in Burnaby and is a Certified Synergetic Play Therapist. She is on the Education Committee of the BCPTA and coordinates the Play Cafés.
Naomi Is a clinical counselllor currently working in community mental health, providing therapy for children, youth, and their families in Vancouver. She also has a private practice. Naomi has experience working in community and in hospital, remote northern Indigenous communities, as well as in the forensic mental health system – all environments where goodbyes and endings with clients have been inevitable and part of the work.
