BC Play Therapy Association holds workshops throughout the year to help advance the education of Play Therapy Practitioners and related professions. These usually revolve around a specialized speaker teaching a subject of importance to the advancement of play therapy as a therapeutic practice.

Please note: All can attend day 1 ONLY, the presentation on childhood trauma. Day 2 is for EMDR trained professionals and MUST be taken with day 1.

About the Presenter:

Ana M. Gómez, MC, LPC, is a psychotherapist in private practice and a national and international speaker on the use of EMDR therapy and other adjunct approaches with children and adolescents with complex trauma, attachment injuries, and dissociation. Ana was the recipient of the 2011 “Distinguished Service Award” from the Arizona Play Therapy Association and the 2012 Sierra Tucson “Hope Award.” She is a trainer of trainers for the EMDR Institute and EMDR-IBA, and she is the founder and director of the Agate Institute in Phoenix. Ana is the author of Dark, Bad Day Go Away: A Book for Children about Trauma and EMDR Therapy, the Thoughts Kit for Kids, Stories and Storytellers, the Thinking Mind, the Heart, and the Body: A Book for Children about Healing and EMDR Therapy and the co-author of All the Colors of Me: My First Book about Dissociation. She has also authored several chapters in books on the use of EMDR therapy with children. Her latest book is EMDR Therapy and Adjunct Approaches with Children: Complex Trauma, Attachment, and Dissociation. Ana has also developed several programs and protocols, such as the EMDR-Sandtray protocol and an attachment-informed EMDR program for parents and children to heal intergenerational trauma.

About the Workshop:

Children who have experienced trauma and adversity come with extensive deficits and deprivations. They also present with diminished positive and negative affect tolerance and unmet needs. Providing affective EMDR treatment may in fact be intricate and will require to incorporate elements from other approaches such as play therapy.

This workshop will provide advanced strategies for case conceptualization utilizing the AIP model, affective neuroscience, the polyvagal theory and the structural dissociation theory with children with developmentally impaired regulatory systems. Play therapy strategies design to enhance the child’s capacities to tolerate positive and negative affect will be demonstrated. How to enhance the child’s ability to change state while at the same time expanding the child’s capacity to “stay with the state” will be covered.

Who Should Attend:

Day 1 is open to play therapists, family therapists, psychologists, social workers, school counsellors, and other mental health professionals working with children, adolescents and families.

Day 2 is designed for mental health professionals who hold a certificate in EMDR.

“The activities that are the easiest, cheapest, and most fun to do – such as singing, playing games, reading, storytelling, and just talking and listening – are also the best for child development.”
